What is orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology or Ortho-K is a non-surgical procedure that eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day. With Ortho-K you wear specially designed lenses at night while sleeping. These lenses gently change the shape of your eye so that you can see clearly, with your natural vision, during the day.

This safe and effective technique is mainly used to correct short–sightedness (myopia), long – sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia (blurred near vision). It is an alternative to LASIK for those who don’t want surgery. You can find out more at www.osa.net.au

What is an RGP contact lens?

RGP is a type of contact lens called rigid gas permeable or RGP. These lenses are made from highly oxygen permeable plastics and therefore provide a high level of safety because the lenses are able to ‘breath’. RGP lenses can provide superior vision compared to soft lenses for some wearers and can be expected to last for around 1 year when handled correctly.

I have heard RGP lenses are uncomfortable.

Some people do encounter slight to moderate discomfort during the adaption period, usually for just a week or two, when they begin wearing RGP lenses. Once adapted to RGP lenses, most people find them to be very comfortable and as mentioned above, the superior vision and long term health for the eyes can out way the slight inconvenience of the adaption period.

What are disposable lenses?

Disposable contact lenses are made from special types of plastic, a polymer which is softened in the presence of moisture, i.e. tears, and are designed to be worn for a prescribed number of days before the lenses are discarded. Discarding the lenses frequently ensures your lenses are always fresh and clean, important factors in retaining good eye health whilst using soft contact lenses. Menicon produces disposable lenses in daily, fortnightly and monthly disposable regimes. Your optometrist will discuss with you and decide which of these regimes is best for your circumstances. Daily disposable lenses require no cleaning and storage solutions as the lenses are discarded after each use whilst fortnightly and monthly disposable lenses must be cleaned and then stored in disinfecting solution after each wear, prior to the next day’s use.
